As founder and managing director of Petra’s Cleaning Company Ltd, Petra wanted to combine her wealth of cleaning knowledge with business expertise.
Although she had previously held senior roles within other cleaning companies including supervisor, area manager, contracts manager, operations manager and operations director, she didn’t want her own business’ growth to be hampered by her lack of business leadership experience.
Employing over 70 members of staff, Petra often found it difficult to delegate efficiently as she was used to controlling everything; a common issue facing people who have set up their own company from scratch.
Recognising this as an issue that would affect business growth if it wasn’t addressed, she eagerly enrolled on the level 3 Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) course as part of the Ascent programme.
It’s natural for entrepreneurs to experience apprehension when delegating but Petra was happy to tackle this head on, and improve her business knowledge in order to grow her company.
I learned so much from other people on the course who were all in the same situation. I had no business knowledge at all and until I took part in Ascent, I’d built the company by just learning as I went along. But we had reached the stage where that wasn’t good enough anymore.
Since the Ascent programme, I’ve learned to encourage feedback from staff and make it a more inclusive and listening organisation because I know it helps in achieving a happier workforce.
I’ve also become much more trusting and confident in my staff, and now I can successfully delegate which frees me up to focus on growing the business.
